I open my door at 6am


Late autumn sunrise streaks the sky.
Small birds flit and twitter through low trees.
A fat white ibis fossicks in the gutter,
stalking slowly (ignoring me), rhythmically
dipping and lifting its long, hooked beak.

    Is "fossick" colloquial? Can't find it in the dictionary! I see your scene at 6 AM, Rosemary, and I'm captivated.

      Well, good heavens, I hadn't realised, but yes it is colloquial. (I bet you got the meaning anyway.)
